Fix the valve—specify the right clearances, add air purge, make it quick-dismounting—and you've just eliminated bridging, moisture absorption, seized rotors, hammer damage, spark risk, and dust clouds. Six problems. One fix.
Want to find your plant's leverage point? Answer these four questions:
Not where it flows. Where it sits. A hopper that holds material between batches. A mixer discharge that trickles. A sifter that holds oversize.
Why this matters: The longer powder sits, the more time it has to cake, segregate, absorb moisture, and build electrostatic charge. The "sitting" point is almost always your leverage point.
The fix: Redesign the discharge. Bigger outlet. Steeper cone. Active discharger (screw feeder or properly sized rotary valve).
If an operator is hitting it with a hammer, adjusting it by hand, or scraping it with a tool—that's your leverage point. Human intervention means the equipment is failing at its job.
The fix: Eliminate the need for intervention. If they're hitting a hopper, fix the geometry. If they're scraping walls, improve surface finish. If they're adjusting a valve by hand, automate it.
Weekend failures (as we covered in our Sunday breakdown article) are the most expensive. They happen when nobody's watching. They cascade into Monday morning chaos.
The fix: Whatever broke on Sunday is your leverage point. It's the equipment that can't survive a shutdown. Fix it first.
